HIKING GROENDAL WILDERNESS AREA The 30 000-ha Groendal Wilderness Area protects the water catchment area of the Swartkops River (KwaZungha River), with the Groendal Dam in its centre. Lying within the Groot Winterhoek Mountain range, this wilderness area has rugged terrain incised by numerous streams and ravines. The vegetation is predominantly fynbos (heath), with a great diversity of individual species. Isolated pockets of indigenous forest occur in the ravines, and there are also elements of thorny, semi-succulent Valley Bushveld scrub. There is not a wide range of mammal species, but hikers may see baboon (more often heard than seen, however), common duiker, Cape grysbok, bushbuck, grey rhebok and mountain reedbuck. Birdlife is fairly diverse, with approximately 180 species having been recorded. Location: Central coastal part of province, west of Uitenhage. Access: In Uitenhage drive northwards up Caledon St, turn let into Gibbon St, and then right into Groendal Rd, following it t the entrance, Permits are required. Accommodation: None. Camping or sheltering in caves is allowed with a permit, but there are no facilities. Other facilities: Four hiking trails - 14, 32, 36 and 38 km; groups must consist of not fewer than 3 persons. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset. Beware: It is easy to become lost if paths are not followed, sudden changes in the weather can occur.
